What is DNS?

DNS (Domain name system) works as a phonebook for machines. The way your contacts names help you to locate the contact number of a person, similarly, DNS helps internet to locate a particular address.

Web browsers interact by using Internet Protocol addresses. DNS will translate the domain names to Internet protocol address.

For example, if you type www.espn.com, the DNS will convert it into IP address like 192.168.1.1 in IPv4 or also alphanumeric address such as 2400:cb00:2048:c629:d7a2 in IPv6. So we human do not need to remember these IP addresses. DNS will do that for us.

So how do DNS works?

DNS basically converts a hostname into a IP address(which humans can’t remember). Each devices on the internet has been given an IP address, like your house on the street is given a number to locate your address. So if you want to open a webpage, you will just have to type a domain www.forexample.com ,web browser will send a request to DNS servers to translate website name into IP address. When the IP address is found, it will then download the contents of the page.

This happens very quick, but if the process is slow you can change the DNS servers.

What are the options or alternative DNS?

Simple to use DNS servers are- Cloudfare, Quad9, Google and OpenDNS.

Cloudfare9 is very new in the market, the IP addresses are also very easy to remember-1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 (primary and secondary).Cloudfare claims that it is the fastest and privacy focussed DNS Server of the world.

Google’s addresses are also very easy to remember-8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 IP addresses. It is the largest public DNS Services in the world handling 400 billion requests per day.

OpenDNS has got-208.67.222.222 (primary) and 208.67.220.220 (secondary) addresses. It is the longest running DNS Server that focuses on kid’s safety. It got picked by Cisco in 2015. It has got paid packages and some free as well. But both will require you to register first. It a good family shield server.

Quad9 has- 9.9.9.9 and 149.112.112.112 IP addresses. IBM is one the partners of Quad9, it gives you the benefits of speed and security. It gives high performance along with privacy. It automatically blocks domains that give malicious content.

Why to change DNS server?

A. You will get a faster services:

Changing your DNS services will improve your loading of webpages faster, ( incase you are getting slower results).  It may depend on how close the third party DNS Servers are to you, but it would worth to check it out.

B. You can block out the pages and content:

Some DNS Servers provide extra filtering for blocking phishing sites and also websites that compromise with your computer data. Few of the DNS Servers will help you for it.DNS Server such as OpenDNS is focussed on kids safety.

C. Content that is blocked in your region can be viewed:

Few third party DNS Servers allow you to watch the content that’s geographically blocked in your region. For example, few countries can’t access Netflix, Itv or Hulu, some DNS Server can help you with that.

So here are few easy ways to change the DNS Server on Window, Linux, Android, MAC OS and Chrome OS:

Before you start:

If you are willing to change your DNS Server, remember to note the IP addresses on a piece of paper in case the new addresses do not work for you. Keep the old addresses as a backup, it is advisory to save the old addresses as well.

How to change DNS Server on windows:

You can easily change the DNS server settings using control panel:

1.Go to Control Panel.

2.Click on Network and Internet.

3.Network and sharing

4.Click Change adapter settings options in the left pane.

5.Click the network interface connected to the internet

6.Select Properties option.

7.Select the Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

8.Click Properties.

9.Click the Use the following DNS Server address option.

10. Type your preferred and alternate DNS address.

If you are using Google Public DNS, open DNS, or Cloudfare, use these setting:

  • Google Public DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
  • OpenDNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
  • Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1

How to make the changes in  DNS Server on your  Android 9 Pie:

Open your settings-à tap on Network and Internet -à then tap on Advanced-à then tap on Private DNS

1.Select Private DNS provider host name

2.Enter dns.google as host name

3.Click save.

How to change DNS Server on Linux (Ubuntu):

For Linux you can change DNS Server settings by:

Click system> Prefrences> Network Connection

Select the suitable connection for which you  are looking for to to configure  with google public DNS. For example:

  1. For Ethernet connection: Select wired tab, then select your network interface
  2. To change setting for a wireless connection, select wireless tab, then select the wireless network.
  3. Click edit, select IPv4 settings or IPv6 settings tab.
  4. If the selected method is Automatic (DHCP) select Automatic (DHCP) address only.
  5. If the method is different then, do not change it.
  6. In the DNS Servers, enter this,

For IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and/ or 8.8.4.4

For IPv6: 2001:4860:4860

If you’re using OpenDNS ,Google Public DNS or CloudFlare, you can make use these settings:

  • Google Public DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
    • OpenDNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
    • Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1

How to change DNS Server for MAC OS:

  1. Click Apple > System Preferences > Network.
  2. Check the connection for which you want to change the DNS Server settings. For example:

For an Ethernet connection, select Built-In Ethernet àAdvanced.

  • To make the changes in the settings for the wireless connection, select Airport à Advanced.
  • Select the DNS tab.
  • Click + to replace the addresses or add the addresses:
    • For IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4.
    • For IPv6: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and/or 2001:4860:4860::8844.
  • Click Apply > OK.

How to change DNS Server for Chrome Operating System

  1. SettingsàNetwork
  2. Select the connection for which you want to change the DNS Server settings:
    1. For an Ethernet connection go to Ethernet section.
  3. Open the  Network section area à Name the server section
    1. For IPv4:Click the Custom name servers button and enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
    1. For IPv6: Click the Custom name servers button and enter 2001:4860:4860::8888 and/or 2001:4860:4860::8844.
  4. Apply the settings.
